Case Study: Bobbi Brown Pro Studio, Soho

Background

The Bobbi Brown make-up, fragrance and skincare brand is one of the best known in the world. Founded in 1991 by make-up artist Bobbi Brown, it was acquired by Estée Lauder in 1995, with Bobbi retaining creative control. She left the company last year but the brand is still going strong, with products sold in over 70 countries through a network of department stores and stand-alone outlets.

Project

DRF has just completed work on a brand-new concept store for Bobbi Brown in London, which opened in September 2017. The first of its kind in the UK, the Pro Studio in Soho aims to bring together make-up artists, customers and beauty influencers to immerse them in all things Bobbi Brown.

The store is on two levels, with the upstairs looking like a typical Bobbi Brown ‘studio’ store, offering customers the chance to discover its range of cosmetics and other products, and to access the services of professional artists.

But it’s the ground floor space that turns the store into a Pro Studio. This area is used to host masterclasses and workshops by one of Bobbi Brown’s advanced or pro artists. It features personal make-up stations and high-tech presentation screens showcasing the latest industry trends and must-have products. It also includes a professionally-lit studio where photography and filming takes place for the brand’s social media platforms.

One of the main focuses for us on the Bobbi Brown Pro Studio project was the lighting. This needed to be as natural as possible while at the same time being bright and focused – but not dazzling and over-lit – in certain areas, such as in the product area, at the make-up stations and in the workshop and studio space.

It was also vital that everything we installed suited the brand’s crisp, clean and modern store interiors, as well as complementing its ethos of using cosmetics to enhance rather than create beauty, so we worked closely with our client and the other contractors to ensure a cohesion and continuity in the look and feel of the store.
